Résumé : |
"Das Glasperlenspiel" (The Glass Bead Game) is Hermann Hesse's final novel, published in 1943. Set in a distant future, the story follows Joseph Knecht, a talented scholar in the fictional province of Castalia. Castalia is dedicated to intellectual pursuits and the cultivation of the Glass Bead Game, an abstract synthesis of arts and sciences. The novel chronicles Knecht's life as he rises to become Magister Ludi (Master of the Game). Throughout his journey, Knecht debates the merits of Castalia's isolated intellectual life with his friend Plinio Designori and encounters influential figures like the Music Master and Father Jacobus. As Knecht masters the Game and advances in the Castalian hierarchy, he begins to question the order's isolation from the outside world. This internal conflict leads to a personal crisis, culminating in Knecht's controversial decision to leave the order and seek a life of practical service.
The book explores themes of intellectual pursuit, the balance between contemplation and action, and the individual's role in society. It earned Hesse the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946. |
